The title, JOURNEYS, EVERY STORY PAINTS A PICTURE
encapsulates the artwork of Adrian Brooks. The vast
majority of paintings, drawings and collages displayed
here were produced while travelling and they narrate
the 'stories' that form part of any travelling adventure.
There exists a fascinating history of artists who
made a visual record of their travels. JMW Turner
documented his journeys around Britain and across
Europe, John Ruskin evoked the magic of Venice, Paul
Gaugain conjured a vision of the delights of Tahiti,
David Hockney looked humorously at life in California
and Stephen Farthing has recorded in collage his travels
in Uruguay.
In the work of these and many artists lies the appeal
of leaving the familiar homeland and discovering with
fresh eyes new places where people, culture and customs
are all unfamiliar, where there exists the possibility
of adventure with every encounter.
The sub-title EVERY STORY PAINTS A PICTURE sets the
paintings within a narrative genre. The artwork records
the endless stories that accompany any journey; a
chance encounter in a Venice market; a group of schoolchildren
in a street in Pushkar; a wig shop in Delhi; a romantic
liaison in Paris or a dog outing in New York. In the
paintings the main characters of these narratives
are placed like actors on a stage who are living out
the stories of their lives' they are often humorous
and sometimes tragic.
